CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT

As a German my worst fear is an office full of white Americans who have just been told it’s about to be your birthday.

When I said that to my bestie and co-host Livia, she hit me with the idea of making a game out of avoiding these  superstition pitfalls, like when Americans wish me a happy birthday prematurely and scare the bejeezus out of me. And then LIES! was born.

LIES! is a game about navigating fears and superstitions in conversation, without the other players knowing what  superstition they're trying to avoid/identify. Every player draws a set number of cards from the main deck (120 cards) on which there are superstitions from around the world, as well as DECOYS. The decoys are superstitions that are not real or believed anywhere, be it mannerisms, phrases or verbal pitfalls. Players will try to work the superstitions on their cards into the group's conversation without it being detected. To help there's a separate deck of prompt cards (50 cards each with multiple themed prompts) to help hide the superstitions.

If you think you catch the superstition being played out (ie. a player going "Oh, it's your birthday next month? Happy Birthday!") you shout "LIES!" and catch the player out. If you say "lies" you have to correctly identify the superstition being broken ("Congratulating someone early for their birthday is bad luck") and identify if the superstition is real or a lie. If you get it right you get a point and the card is retired. If you get them wrong the accused player gets a point and keeps playing the card.  This continues until a player amasses a set number of points.

LIES! Is in development and being finetuned, est. release in digital form so far is May 2022. Funding for a physical copy of the game is TBD.

LIES! will include

  • 120 cards of superstitions/harmless things
  • 50 conversation prompts to help hide the superstitions
